Salsa music is generally relegated to the ’World Music’ section in the larger music stores. Regular browsers report on the diminishing rows devoted exclusively to afro-caribbean music, but if you’re craving salsa right now and need something that is not a rare pearl, you will probably be able to find it on the Champs-Elysées, at either Virgin or FNAC, although the latest-breaking news informs us that the FNAC is a wasteland for Salsa : try Virgin first. If you like to browse through racks of used CDs looking for rarities and other treats, check out Gibert, near St-Michel, close to the intersection of the Rue des Ecoles and Boulevard St Michel. Generally compulsive salsaholics in France order via internet or by friends who travel to New York and points west - but you’ll never cease to be amazed at what you might find at Gibert, if you don’t lose yourself in the process : there are several Giberts, each with a different specialty, and they’re all within about 50 meters of one another, so don’t feel stupid if you go into the wrong one and ask for CDs, we’ve done it too.
